Looking After Your Midas Shoes
We want to ensure you can enjoy your favourite Midas pieces for years to come. After all, a well-loved, quality pair of shoes is an investment in long-lasting style. With the right products and a little TLC, you can keep your shoes looking and feeling good, season after season.
General Maintenance
There are three essential steps to caring for your shoes: cleaning, protection and storage. A few simple tips and tricks will go a long way to keeping your shoes in good condition.
Cleaning:
- After each wear, gently brush off dirt and dust. A dry microfibre or cotton cloth is ideal.
- If spot cleaning is required, use a damp (not wet) cloth and a cleaner that is appropriate for the material to be cleaned.
- Avoid soaking leather or suede shoes in water. Wetting leather or suede can result in shrinking, brittleness or discolouration. If left wet for too long, leather and suede may develop mould or mildew, or begin to rot.
Protection:
- Apply a waterproofing spray like our Water & Stain Protector to protect the material and help maintain the colour. Suede shoes and winter boots especially require additional protection to avoid damage.
Storage:
- Always store your shoes in a cool, dry place.
- Stuff the toe with tissue paper to help them keep their shape.
- Rotate between styles where possible to help them rest and maintain their longevity.
Armed with these tips and a few simple products, you can look after your shoes and enjoy them for seasons to come! Midas shoe care products are available in-store and online. Please note that the Water & Stain Protector is available in-store only.
How to care for leather shoes
Caring for leather shoes extends their longevity and keeps them in top condition. Knowing which products to use is key to ensuring you’ll have your favourite leather pieces with you for a long time.
- When you get your new shoes home, the first step should be to spray them with a protective spray, such as our Water & Stain Protector, which will help repel water and guard against water and oil-based stains. Spray them regularly to ensure they stay protected.
- If you notice that the shoes are a bit tight here and there, try our Stretch Spray, which allows you to spot treat areas to expand the leather slightly so it sits more comfortably.
- After a few wears, you may see some scuffing or dulling of the colour. Restore them with products like our Super White Restorer for white leather or the Liquid Reno Polish for black or coloured leathers.
- Want to touch up your shoes while you’re traveling or on the go? Try Instant Shine, which comes in a handy, compact size and adds a brilliant shine with a few swipes of a sponge. Another convenient option is our Shoe Wipes, which contain carnauba wax. These wipes are antibacterial and quick-drying, allowing you to refresh your shoes while also adding shine.
- Periodically, treat your leather shoes with more deeply nourishing products to help maintain the leather’s suppleness. A leather conditioner, such as the Zorbel Leather Conditioner or Shu-Glo, is a multi-purpose product that cleans, conditions and protects leather shoes.
How to care for PU or patent leather shoes
Shoes made from polyurethane (PU) or patent leather require special attention to keep them looking good.
-
Just like your natural leather shoes, PU and patent leather shoes should be sprayed with Water & Stain Protector regularly to help protect against water and oil-based stains.
-
Patent leather and PU have a small amount of stretch that can be encouraged with the use of our Stretch Spray. Spot treat tight areas for the best fit.
-
As both materials are often highly susceptible to scuffs, maintain the high shine of your patent leather and PU with the Liquid Reno Polish or the travel-friendly Instant Shine. The anti-bacterial Shoe Wipes are perfect for a quick refresh, helping sanitise and maintain that shiny surface.
-
For multi-purpose care and protection, our Zorbel Leather Conditioner and Shu-Glo are perfect for use on PU and patent leather, helping to clean, condition and protect your shoes while leaving a polished finish.
How to care for suede shoes, microsuede shoes or nubuck leather shoes
The beautiful, textured finish of suede, microsuede (synthetic suede) and nubuck leather requires careful maintenance with specially formulated products. Don’t forget to check the packaging to see if a product is suitable prior to use.
- The Water & Stain Protector is an essential first step in caring for your suede, microsuede or nubuck shoes. These materials are especially susceptible to damage from water or oil-based staining, so protecting them early and often is the key to keeping them looking good.
- If you wear them regularly, you can give your suede or nubuck shoes a refresh with the Suede & Nubuck Shampoo, which is a gentle but effective cleanser that is used in conjunction with the Suede & Nubuck Brush to remove dirt and lift light stains or marks.
- Black suede and nubuck can lose its depth of colour over time, requiring touch-ups to keep it looking its best. Use our Black Suede & Nubuck reviver to quickly and conveniently apply pigment to spots of discolouration.
